Taste of Kingston: Food and Community Events for Everyone

August 14, 2026 · by Pierre Nadeau

Kingston has a way of bringing people together. Whether you are a family looking for a free afternoon activity, a couple craving great food and live music, or someone who simply loves being part of a lively community, this city delivers. Over my two decades helping people find their place here, I have learned that the best way to feel at home is to show up and join in. And this season, there are three events that perfectly capture what makes Kingston so special.

From open houses for the little ones to rib festivals for the whole family to sunset concerts in the heart of downtown, here is your guide to the food and community events you will not want to miss.

1. Trillium Gymnastics Open House

Date: August 15, 2026, 2:30 to 4:00 PM Location: Trillium Gymnastics Club, 631 Fortune Crescent

If you have little ones with energy to burn, this is the perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Trillium Gymnastics Club is opening its doors to the community for a free open house, and it promises to be an absolute blast for kids of all ages. The gym will be set up with equipment for children to explore, try their hand at basic gymnastics skills, and burn off some of that seemingly endless summer energy.

Best of all, it is completely free. No registration required, no pressure to sign up for anything just a welcoming space for families to come together, meet the coaches, and let the kids discover a new activity. It is the kind of community offering that reminds you Kingston is a city that cares about its youngest residents. Bring a water bottle, dress the kids in comfortable clothes, and get ready for an afternoon of laughter and active fun.

2. Kingston Ribfest & Craft Beer Show

Date: September 11 to 13, 2026 Location: Kingston Memorial Centre, 303 York Street

This is the event that food lovers circle on their calendars every year. The Kingston Ribfest & Craft Beer Show returns to the Memorial Centre grounds for a full weekend of fall fun, and it truly has something for everyone. The star of the show is, of course, the ribs. Smoky, tender, slathered in sauce, you will find competing pitmasters serving up some of the best barbecue you have ever tasted. Grab a rack or two, share with the table, and compare notes with the family sitting next to you.

But Ribfest is more than just food. The Craft Beer Show brings together local and regional breweries offering samples of their finest pours. For parents, there is a dedicated Kids Fun Zone to keep the little ones entertained while you browse the vendor booths and enjoy the live music. The atmosphere is electric, the smells are intoxicating, and the whole weekend feels like one big block party. Whether you come as a couple for a date night with a pint in hand or bring the whole crew for a Saturday afternoon feast, Ribfest is the highlight of Kingston's early fall calendar.

3. Forever Hip Rockin' the Square: Choir! Choir! Choir!

Date: August 20, 2026 at 7:00 PM Location: Springer Market Square, Downtown Kingston

There is something magical about a warm summer evening in Springer Market Square, and when you add the energy of Choir! Choir! Choir! to the mix, you get an unforgettable night. This is not a performance you just watch, it is one you take part in. Choir! Choir! Choir! is the internationally acclaimed singing experience that turns an entire crowd into one giant choir. No experience needed, no audition required just show up ready to sing your heart out alongside hundreds of your newest friends.

The Forever Hip Rockin' the Square series has become a beloved Kingston tradition, and this edition promises to be one of the best yet. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair, grab some takeout from a nearby Market Square restaurant, and settle in for an evening of community connection through music. Whether you are belting out a classic rock anthem next to your partner or harmonizing with a stranger who becomes a friend by the end of the night, this is the kind of experience that reminds you why community matters.

Why Kingston's Event Scene Matters

What I love most about this city is how its events bring together people from every walk of life. At Ribfest, you will see young couples sharing a rack of ribs beside multi-generational families. At Rockin' the Square, teenagers stand next to retirees, all singing the same song. At the Trillium Open House, parents connect over coffee while their kids discover new skills. These moments are the threads that weave a community together.

As someone who has spent over 20 years helping people find their home here in Kingston, I have come to believe that a great home is only half the picture. The other half is the life you build around it, the neighbours you meet, the festivals you attend, the memories you make. Kingston makes that easy.
